VIX, VVIX & Market Volatility Analysis
Read volatility before reading a ticker.
Compare implied and realized volatility, SKEW, positioning proxies and macro indicators before exploring individual stocks and options.
The dashboard refreshes from cached observations; sources update at different times. Check the displayed timestamps. This is not a real-time quote service.
90-day adaptive risk levels
The P label is an adaptive historical percentile, not a probability of a market decline. LOW / MED / HIGH reflects available history; the day count shows observations used. Colors summarize relative conditions, not buy or sell instructions. Read the methodology notes.
Market tone is cautious to negative, driven by clear skepticism on the AI trade: an S&P 500 ex-AI index is outperforming, investors are questioning neocloud debt-fueled returns (with Musk warning of widespread failures), and Microsoft is pursuing large voluntary buyouts for capital efficiency amid its AI build-out. Additional drags include Apple product-quality issues on a new device, a bigger JetBlue loss, FTC action against a major retailer, and rising political uncertainty from a weakened Trump coalition ahead of midterms. Partial offsets are an Anthropic S-1 filing (supporting IPO activity), an Apollo stake deal, talk of improving airline margins, and a fully expected Fed hold, but these do not outweigh the fraying of the growth/AI narrative that has supported equities.
VIX, volatility premium & market risk
Risk, premium and positioning in one view
Volatility conditions are comparatively stable. Confirm symbol-level risk before acting.
A fast read of the conditions that matter for entry risk
VIX & VVIX: volatility structure
Expected equity volatility and volatility of volatility
VIX measures options-implied expectations for 30-day S&P 500 volatility. VVIX measures expected volatility of the forward VIX. Neither predicts the direction of stock prices. Definitions & sources
Implied vs. realized volatility
Volatility risk premium and the cost of uncertainty
A ratio above 1 means the implied-volatility input exceeds the realized-volatility comparison. It is not a guaranteed selling edge: horizons differ, future volatility can rise and trading costs matter.
Dealer mechanics, systematic flow and stress pressure
GEX and positioning proxies are model estimates, not a direct inventory of dealer holdings. SKEW and the model's tail-risk classification measure different aspects of risk and can disagree; neither rules out a large market move.
SPY, QQQ and IWM either confirm or challenge the read
Built from VIX, VVIX, realized volatility and index-confirmation observations. Classifications describe market structure; they are not personalized investment advice or an order instruction. Latest observation: Oct 26, 2026 9:20 PM EDT.
How to read this volatility dashboard
Start with the market backdrop, compare volatility measures, then examine the evidence for an individual symbol. No single indicator establishes a trading opportunity.
What do VIX, VVIX and SKEW measure?
VIX describes expected S&P 500 volatility, while VVIX describes uncertainty about VIX itself. SKEW reflects the pricing of tail risk in S&P 500 options. A subdued VIX does not mean tail risk has disappeared.
Index definitions: Cboe VIX, Cboe VVIX and Cboe SKEW background. These references explain the indices; they do not imply a direct Cboe data feed or endorsement.
How are the percentile and risk labels used?
The macro cards use available daily observations from a requested 90-day history window. The adaptive percentile blends shorter and longer lookbacks when enough observations exist. It is not a fixed VIX threshold or a crash probability.
History may be shorter than the requested window. Confidence labels describe history availability, not forecast accuracy. Macro-card colors and the VIX Intelligence regime are separate views and need not match.
Are these live quotes or trading signals?
The page displays cached market observations and derived research. Dashboard refresh, model generation and underlying quote times are different; refreshing the page does not make an older observation current. Instruments may also have different market sessions.
Positioning and gamma labels are proxies, not verified dealer positions or executable price levels. Missing values and limited-history warnings should not be interpreted as low risk. This is generalized research, not personalized advice.
